Social Activities
Social Activities
Congregation Shir Ami members love getting together to participate in a wide variety of social activities! The current pandemic has changed how some of these events have taken place, so be sure to check our Calendar for specific dates of upcoming events. Some of the fun ways we connect include:
Havdalah Potluck Dinner
Shir Ami members enjoy the fun and relaxing tradition of meeting at members’ homes to observe the ritual of Havdalah together, to socialize with friends, to build community, and to share a delicious potluck dinner. Some past themed Shir Ami potluck dinners have included Jewish deli foods, Mexican dinner items, Italian, Israeli dishes, Picnic/Summer foods, Surf & Turf, and more!
The Happy Bookers (Book Club)
Shir Ami members who love to read meet monthly (at members’ homes) to discuss selected novels with Jewish themes or characters. Past book club selections have included ‘Sarah’s Key, ‘Sacred and Profane’, ‘The Book Thief’, ‘Friday the Rabbi Slept Late’, ‘The Color of Water’, ‘Safekeeping’, and many others. All members are welcome to come and enjoy socializing and snacks whether they have read the book of the month or not!
Group Outings
Shir Ami members get together for planned group outings as opportunities arise. Past adult social group outings have included attending plays, movies, visiting museums, going to see live shows, taking road trips, going on scavenger hunts, escape room outings, and more!
Shir Ami Choir
Shir Ami members who love to sing can join the Shir Ami Choir and lend their voices to add to the spirit of the High Holy Days and other special services. Choir practice for the High Holy Days generally starts several months prior to Rosh Hashanah, and meets with the Rabbi weekly (or as needed) until Yom Kippur services.
Special Workshops
Shir Ami offers special workshops led by members who volunteer to share their wonderful skills and talents (and homes) with other Shir Ami members. Past workshops have included challah making, nutrition for optimal health, and Tai Chi. Spend a fun morning, afternoon, or evening with other members doing something you love and/or learning how to do something new!
Women’s Mah Jongg Club
The women in our group meet once or twice a month to play Mah Jongg, kibbitz, nosh and enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Our members volunteer to host these afternoon games at their homes. Members who would like to make a donation at the end of each game may do so. At the end of the year the group makes a donation to Shir Ami and chooses another worthy Jewish charity.
Men’s Poker Group
Join the men’s poker group and you can learn Omaha, Follow the Queen, High Chicago, Rack, Queen’s game, Baseball and many other poker variations. The Shir Ami’s men’s poker group generally meets every other Wednesday from 7:00-10:30pm in members’ homes. An email is sent early in the week and as long as there are at least 5 or 6 people able to attend there is a game. To learn more about the men’s poker group, email congregation@shir-ami.com.
Evites, the Weekly Whisper, and/or other communications go out to members with detailed information about these and other Shir Ami events. We strive to keep our calendar up to date, so please check back regularly for upcoming events.
