Book: The Best Strangers in the World: Stories from a Life Spent Listening by Ari Shapiro

About the Book
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “ … a witty, poignant book that captures Ari Shapiro’s love for the unusual, his pursuit of the unexpected, and his delight at connection against the odds.”—Ronan Farrow, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and New York Times-bestselling author
From the beloved host of NPR's All Things Considered, a stirring memoir-in-essays---and a love letter to journalism. Ari Shapiro takes us around the globe, revealing the stories behind narratives that are sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, but always poignant … traveling on Air Force One with President Obama … following the path of Syrian refugees fleeing war … and all the time learning from people fighting for social justice at home and abroad. Ari Shapiro keeps seeking ways to help people listen to one another; to find connection and commonality with those who may seem different; to remind us that, before religion, or nationality, or politics, we are all human. The Best Strangers in the World is a testament to one journalist’s passion for Considering All Things—and sharing what he finds with the rest of us.

The Caring Circle - Care to Get Involved?

Lending a helping hand to members in times of stress is a vital part of any congregation. Kind and caring Shir Ami members volunteer in this group to help provide support to other Shir Ami congregants in times of life's challenges such as illness, death, divorce, and birth. Specific activities include helping to secure a minyan for a memorial or shiva service, sending notes to members on the loss of a loved one, arranging transportation for a member to attend services or other Shir Ami events, and providing meals, sending cards, visiting, or calling congregants during times of illness or post-hospitalization.
If you are experiencing any of these challenges and wish to be contacted by the Caring Circle, please contact Rabbi Reice. If you wish to be a more active Caring Circle volunteer, please contact Sara Goodman at CaringCircle@Shir-Ami.com. All are welcome!

Community News
Secure Community Network Launches Recurring Seasonal 10-Minute Weather Safety Webinar Series

The Secure Community Network (SCN), the official safety and security organization for the Jewish community in North America, today announced a new, recurring series of weather-related preparedness webinars aimed at helping Jewish institutions and community members proactively prepare for seasonal weather events. The series kicks off with two comprehensive spring weather safety webinars, available immediately for community members to view at their convenience.
The first two webinars, "10-Minute Weather Safety Series: Spring Weather" and “10-Minute Weather Safety Series — Hurricanes and Floods,” provide critical information on recognizing and responding to severe weather events including tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes, flash floods, and riverine flooding. Viewers will learn important safety strategies such as understanding weather alerts, emergency preparedness best practices, and how to protect themselves and their communities effectively during spring weather emergencies.
"The goal of this webinar series is to empower Jewish communities to employ timely, actionable preparedness steps to protect their institutions and homes against seasonal weather-related incidents," said Secure Community Network National Director & CEO Michael Masters. "As we have seen recently across the country — from wildfires in the Carolinas and California to hurricanes across the South — weather-related incidents can be rapid, unexpected, devastating crises that put lives in danger and turn communities upside down. Taking a proactive approach to safety significantly mitigates risks and protects communities from the worst in moments of crisis.”
Community members and organizations will have the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session with SCN’s Emergency Preparedness Program Director Murray Snow on 02 April. As part of SCN’s best-practice, all-hazards approach to safety, security, and resiliency, these live question-and-answer sessions will follow each seasonal webinar offering.
SCN urges all community institutions and members to participate in this educational initiative and enhance their preparedness for seasonal weather-related challenges. To access the webinar and register for the upcoming Q&A session, click here or visit SecureCommunityNetwork.Org.

An invitation to our Texas Jewish community for LGBTQ+ rights
We wanted to reach out and invite you to be involved in Keshet and SOJOURN’s on-the-ground efforts during the Texas legislative session. Together, we can send a message that Texas Jews stand UP for LGBTQ+ rights!
The 2025 Texas legislative session is already well underway, and we’re gathering a group of Jewish community members in our state who are committed and ready to take action on behalf of our LGBTQ+ siblings. Together, we will:
-
Join an informational Zoom call on March 4 at 6 PM CT to cover the current state legislative landscape related to LGBTQ+ rights, practice our storytelling and advocacy skills, and unify around our Jewish commitment to the cause.
-
Gather at the Texas State Capitol in Austin on March 24 for Equality Texas’s All In For Equality Day, where we’ll present a strong Jewish contingent for LGBTQ+ rights to legislators.
We hope to see as many members of your community as possible at these two events!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. We’re grateful to be in this fight with you!
Shabbat Shalom and Solidarity,

Austin Jewish Film Festival March Film: A Photographic Memory
Our March offering is the film A Photographic Memory, which will be screened on Sunday, March 30 at 4:00 p.m. Filmmaker Rachel Seed will be in attendance for a live Q & A following the film.
Synopsis: Sheila Turner Seed was an award-winning New York City-based journalist in the 1970s who interviewed such photography luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gordon Parks, Cecil Beaton, and Lisette Model. When she passed away suddenly and tragically, she left behind an infant daughter, Rachel. More than 30 years later, Rachel has herself become a filmmaker, photographer, and writer. A Photographic Memory marks a moving attempt to navigate grief and nostalgia as Rachel deep-dives into Shelia’s archives, much of which had been forgotten.WHY WE LIKE THIS FILM: Brought to our attention by Phil Spertus, who knew Sheila Turner Seed, this film is a beautifully made and touching story of her daughter, Rachel trying to understand and connect with the mother she never got to know. Rachel is expected to travel to Austin for a post screening Q&A.
For tickets and further details, visit austinjff.org/events/aphotographicmemory . There is a $2 discount for tickets purchased through the website, bringing the cost to $13 for a ticket.
